Landscape Aesthetics Part 2

Flavors

After reading our previous “Ingredients” article, you hopefully have a better idea of which elements you’d like to add to your space. This will already go a long way in communicating your landscape desires to your designer. The next level is thinking about how all of these elements are interconnected and how the landscape appears as a whole. This article will focus on a few varieties of landscape aesthetics, or some of the “flavors” we find applicable in our area. Don’t be afraid to mix and match or borrow aesthetics to create a unique space that’s entirely your own. Your designer can help you make these decisions as they blend your home’s design, the existing conditions of your landscape, and your desired elements into the perfect fit for your space.

Formal Garden – clean, geometric lines are key for a formal garden aesthetic. Neatly trimmed hedges and topiary lend themselves to an elegant and structured look.

Cottage Garden – informal and overflowing with textures, cottage gardens use a wide variety of perennials and shrubs to create a homey, overgrown look.

Japanese Garden – Tranquility is the main element seen in Japanese gardens. Water features, boulders, and an intentional selection of trees, shrubs, and perennials all come together to create a serene space that mimics natural landscapes in a carefully cultivated way.

Mediterranean Garden – Rustic and elegant, Mediterranean gardens call upon natural stone, terracotta, and iron elements to simulate sun-soaked vistas.

Modern/Contemporary Garden – clean lines and minimalistic plant palettes allow hardscapes to shine in these modern gardens. Aluminum pergolas and concrete pavers are often utilized to provide versatility without sacrificing elegance.

Prairie Garden – Unruly but not untamed, prairie gardens borrow from the beauty of natural grasslands. Native grasses and perennials are essential for these flowy, low-maintenance, ecologically beneficial landscapes.
